Slack has filed an antitrust complaint against Microsoft in the European Union (EU) over the integration of Microsoft Teams with Office. Nextcloud isn’t the only company to file such a complaint. Together with other members of the alliance, we are asking competition authorities in Europe to maintain a level playing field, give customers free choices and give competition a fair chance. This kind of behavior is bad for consumers, for the market and certainly for local businesses in the EU. Copy an innovator’s product, bundle it with your own flagship product, take their business off, then stop innovating. It’s very similar to what Microsoft did when it decimated competition in the browser market and stopped nearly all browser innovation for more than a decade.

Thus, more specialized EU companies cannot compete on merit, as the key to success is not a good product, but the ability to distort competition and block market access. Nextcloud argues that Microsoft has blocked other cloud service providers from taking advantage of its position as a gatekeeper to expand their reach into neighboring markets, thereby pushing users deeper into its ecosystem. While self-preference is not necessarily illegal under EU competition laws, if a company abuses its dominant market position, it can break the law. Microsoft has not done so through a technical advantage or sales advantage, but by preferring itself over other services, while strongly supporting its own products and services. Microsoft has increased its market share in the EU to 66%, while the market share of local carriers has fallen from 26% to 16%.

Nextcloud claims that by forcing consumers to sign up and hand over their data to Microsoft, the Windows giant limits consumer choice and creates an unfair barrier to other companies offering competing services.

Now, along with a coalition of other software and cloud organizations and European Union (EU) companies, dubbed the “Level Playing Field Coalition”, NextCloud has formally informed the European Commission (EU) about Microsoft’s anti-competitive behavior by OneDrive Cloud. Remember how Microsoft spent the late ’90s and early ’00s in hot water by imposing Internet Explorer on its customers? European open-source cloud company Nextcloud does.
